Posterous theme by Cory Watilo

Week of May 21-25

This week, we will be continuing with the American Revolution and preparing for camp. Since state testing is over, we have started back on our novel study, Hope’s Crossing.  This book is getting very exciting!  Ask your child about what is happening to Hope Wakeman.  Many of the students are working on a weaving project or a sampler in American Revolution. We just finished our last week of spelling.  We will dedicate the last few weeks to cursive. Several of my students have asked for more time to finish their challenge project.  If you need more time, you can turn it in on Monday, June 4th.  We will be presenting them on that Monday and Tuesday.

The fifth graders will vote on their 5th grade T-shirt design submitted by many students. The students will wear their shirts on the last day of school, for the promotion ceremony!  Please get in your t-shirt order form by Friday so I can submit the order.  I want to make sure we have them in time.  On the last day of school, all parents are invited to the fifth graders promotion assembly.  It will start promptly at 1:45pm.  Mark your calendars…..you don’t want to miss this event!   There will be dessert after the assembly for all fifth graders and their families.   If you want to help out with the picnic lunch, please let me know.

CAMP INFO—Camp is quickly approaching---next week!  The student medical forms should already be turned in.  Students without complete paperwork will not be able to attend camp.  If your child takes daily medication, there is a special form that must be turned in with the medication bottle so we can give it to the child at camp. Thank you to all of my wonderful chaperones for coming to the chaperone meeting!

Week of May 7-11

This week we will be learning about the many reasons why the colonists were angry with King George III.  We will also be discussing how the colonists rebelled against the tyranny!  There will be a Boston Tea Party on MONDAY, May 14th for all students who bring their paper to class.  (Sorry, I had to change the original date due to a meeting that I must attend.)  If you would like to join us, it will be at 12:30.  Every child needs a teacup and saucer (not a mug) to describe in their paper and for the tea party.  I suggest going to Goodwill to get one if you do not have one.  We do have a few to loan out that I have purchased.  If anyone is willing to donate cookies or pastries, please let me know.

In preparation for 6th grade, I will be very strict with the conventions in all written work.  I AM RAISING THE BAR FOR ALL!  Many students are not using capitals, periods, and correct spelling on their everyday work.  I want to emphasize how very important these skills are and should be followed for every assignment. Some students may be asked to re-write an assignment until they use correct conventions.

Our class received letters from the soldiers of the 62nd Engineer Co., 2nd Platoon.  Earlier in the year, we sent care packages to Iraq filled with letters, poems, pictures, and goodies. The students were so excited to receive mail!!  We also received a picture of their unit.  The thank you letters will filled with gratitude of our support.  I am so proud of my class!

Camp—Your read-a-thon pledge money is due on Friday, May 11th.  The rest of the OMSI Camp money is due May 15th.
